More about Elkhorn Area Fire Department

The department began in 1885 and has grown into one of the busiest departments in Walworth County. The building at 34 S Wisconsin Street is the oldest fire station still standing, currently used as a private business. Also the current City Hall once served as the fire station. Three garage doors were located on the west side of the station facing Broad Street.
The first fire engine was purchased for approximately $1000.00. The single pump engine was the sole apparatus manned by 34 volunteer firemen. Eventually a hose tender was acquired for use with the engine.
The rescue squad was formed in 1954. At this time it operated as a separate entity from the fire department. In 2003 the rescue squad merged with the fire department and the EMS Division was formed. The ambulance operates today at the Advanced EMT level. The station is staffed with one Advanced EMT 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days a year.
Today the department boasts 3 Med units, 2 engines, 2 quints, a heavy rescue as well as a grass rig.
Together our department runs over 1300 calls per year.
