More about Eutaw & Greene County High School Alumni Assoc. & Vera Brewer Scholarship

It all began one nice fall day in Eutaw, AL where a conversation took place between two young ladies (Beverly Price Jones and now the late Vera Brewer Williams) of Eutaw. The discussion was centered on the Banks Hall/Eutaw Colored /Carver High School Reunion that was held every other year in Eutaw. During that era that was the only high school for Blacks to attend. Although there was another school in town, during those times the schools were segregated. As we talked about how great it was for those individuals to return every other year to reunite and share whatever stories or experiences on their heart. We began to wonder just why someone hasn’t put together a reunion for Eutaw High which is now Greene County High.

As a result of our conversation the Eutaw High / Greene County Reunion was organized. Unfortunately Vera passed away before the reunion was organized and the scholarship foundation is named in honor of “Mrs. Vera Brewer Williams. The reunion mission and goal is to give back to our community by the means of a scholarship.
Our goal is to hold a school reunion every other year during Labor Day weekend Friday – Sunday, providing we have enough participants. Individuals that attended and or graduated from the school are welcome to attend the reunion. The reunion is a great way for all classes to come together.

A few facts surrounding the reunion are:

First: The name of the reunion came from the fact there is only one high school in Eutaw.

Second: Greene County High is the original name (1930’s or 1940’s) of the current high school.

Third: Eutaw High school was given that name as a result of the town integrating students (1971) from Carver High with Greene County High.

Fourth: In 1979 Eutaw was rebuilt and the name remained the same, Eutaw High.

Fifth: In 2000 Eutaw High and Paramount High merged to become one high school and at that time the name changed back to Greene County High.

Although the school has gone through different name changes the fact still remains, there’s only one high school at the present in Eutaw. Since the majority of our citizens graduated from the school, we feel that we can make a difference in our future by giving back to our youth in aiding and assisting with their future.

We are taking the reunion to another level by providing a scholarship to the graduating seniors of our community. However, there is a process for the student (s) to go through if they are interested in receiving a scholarship from the Vera Brewer Williams Scholarship Foundation.

We pray that our community can find in their hearts to support our youth through this scholarship.
