The First Baptist Church of Boerne had it’s beginning on August 14, 1898, when Rev. J.M. Mizzell met with six charter members to organize the church. The Church joined the Medina River Association on October 14, 1899, and shortly after became pastor-less. In 1906, the San Antonio Association initiated a reorganization of the church.

Church services were first held in a building on the north side of San Antonio Street between Dr. Mason’s office and the court house. That property was sold and beginning in December, 1908, the services were conducted in the Methodist Church. In 1917, the church bought property at 615 S. Main. The Church moved into their new building on June 10, 1923, some twenty-five years after the church was founded.

In 1977, five acres were acquired on the southeast corner of School Street and Highland Street. First Baptist dedicated a beautiful new sanctuary On July 27, 1980. To meet the needs of a growing Sunday School, a Children’s Education Building was dedicated in September of 1987. In 1992, the church was able to purchase an additional 11 acres of adjacent property. In 1994, the church voted to approve a Master Plan to be accomplished in phases. The Master Plan provides adequate space and facilities consistent with the mission and vision of 1,600 in two worship services and a base of 1,200 in Sunday School.

Phase I of the Master Plan included a new sanctuary, added space for the Childrens' Building and additional parking for 100 automobiles. Following a successful capital campaign, the construction part of Phase I began, culminating with the first worship service in the Worship Center on May 3, 1998. During the month of August 1998, First Baptist Church celebrated its 100th anniversary with the theme, “A Century of Faith... a Future of Faithfulness”.

2005 was an eventful year in the life of our Church. Pastor Mike Harkrider began his ministry with First Baptist Church in June. Phase II of the Master Plan, The Family Life Building, which included many new classrooms, commercial kitchen and a Fellowship Hall was completed in September, 2005.

First Baptist Church is a ministry of people, not stone and mortar, but ministries must be housed, people must have places to meet, to study, to sing, and practically speaking, to park. Consequently, historical highlights typically are marked by events commemorating the completion of buildings.
