Firm Foundations Preschool

Thank you for visiting Firm Foundations Preschool! My name is Cayla Boyce,and I am a certified Montessori Early Childhood Teacher (ages 3-6). I believe there are four "magic M's" when it comes to education: Music, Movement, Manipulatives, and Modeling.

Music is Magic! What else can elicit such an emotional and physical response? Facts set to music become part of a child's soul. Music encourages specific movements according to its beat and tempo, it aids in developing the mathematical mind, and enhances creativity.

Movement is the means through which a child learns. As the hand is engaged, so is the mind. Learning to control and perfect movement is the basis of concentration and self-control.

Young children are concrete thinkers, which means they need to see, handle, and physically experience their environment in order to learn most effectively. I have many Montessori materials, as well as those I've created, to enhance your child's development.

Modeling is the best way to teach appropriate behavior, polite manners, and intrinsic values. Children imitate and internalize what they experience in their environment. I strive to make our classroom a place of peace, order, and safety where each child feels free to explore and discover.

My curriculum focuses on phonics, pre-reading and writing skills (matching, rhyming, patterning, beginning sounds, and metal insert work), numeration, and number recognition. In our cultural studies we learn about the beautiful world Heavenly Father has created for us, and its many plants, animals, and people. We celebrate seasons and holidays through music, art, and activities. I teach the children to properly use art supplies and they are free to explore and create. I also do directed art projects which foster the ability to listen to and follow directions.
