First Baptist Church of Bridgeport

The First Baptist Church of Bridgeport is located at 126 Washington Avenue, Bridgeport, CT 06604 on the corner of Washington and West Avenues (one block from Park Ave. and one block from Fairfield Ave). We are an American Baptist Church.

The present building was designed by the Architect Joseph W. Northrop. He had originally designed a square tower but changed his mind to make it octagonal which harmonizes with the interior of the Sanctuary. He described the architecture as Romanesque. The stone used on the exterior is East Haven Sand Stone that was so course and hard it had to be cut with granite cutting tools. This stone has the quality of not staining. The small ledge from which it was quarried has long since been exhausted so it cannot be duplicated or replaced.
