Floyd County Friends Unity Center

Floyd County Friends organized in 1995 to build a multi purpose building, thus becoming the name of Floyd County Friends Unity Center. Floyd County desperately needed a better place to have the Floyd County Stock Show and the Floyd County Fair. This had been a dream for many, many years for the people of Floyd County that were involved in both of these organizations. There had been a number of attempts made to begin this project but never got off of the ground. Approximately
75 people met in the meeting room of Lighthouse Electric to discuss the project. From that initial meeting, everything seemed to “click.” Nick Long was elected as the first president and from the beginning said “If we build it they will come.” After 5 years of receiving many grants, having numerous fund raisers and numerous private donations and much prayer, the Unity Center opened it doors on January 01, 2000 with the building paid for. There were many people and businesses that donated their time and talents for this project. It would have cost much more if it had not been for those donations.

The Unity Center hosts many different events, including the Floyd County Stock Show, the Gala, numerous 4H activities, weddings, birthday parties, family events and much more.

The current Board of Directors and members are: Chad Cook, president, David Foster 1st Vice President, Shawnda, 2nd Vice President and Treasurer, Jerry Chappell, 3rd Vice President and Elaine LaBaume, Secretary. Members of the board are: Sherry Colston, DarLee Foster, Jody Foster, Lindan & D’Lyn Morris, Martin & Robin Stoerner, Coy and Deb LaBaume, Gary & Robin Nixon, Garrett & Lindsie Mathis, Katie Cook, John and Karen Quebe, Paul Raissez, Clint Bigham and Marte Lucke and Darla Chappell. Advisors are: Vance Lemons, Ag teacher in Floydada and Amy Kress and Cristen Brooks, Floyd County Extension Agents.
