Foundation House

Foundation House has built an enduring community of sober and active young men in one of the top cities for young people in recovery—Portland, Maine.

Our purpose is to teach our residents how to do
everything sober. This means walking around town with money in their pocket, beginning and maintaining new relationships, finding work or continuing their education, using a cell phone or a computer and learning how to have fun in sobriety. It also includes living in a community and learning to do the next right thing.

When young men find their way through experience growth occurs. We understand and accept that our residents will struggle. We have created a non-punitive environment based on trust, and allow our residents to navigate real life - by living it.

The principle activities of recovery come first: attending 12 Step meetings, obtaining a sponsor, finding a home group, individual and group therapy and attending all Foundation House groups and activities. After this initial period, we encourage and eventually insist that each young man return to school, get a job or volunteer in the community. We believe in each person’s individuality and offer a unique degree of independence so each young man can define his own way in the next phase of his recovery.
