The Charles Lang Freer House was designed in 1892 by Philadelphia architect Wilson Eyre as the residence for Detroit industrialist and art collector, Charles Lang Freer, founder of the Freer Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.. The Freer House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and serves as the headquarters of the Merrill Palmer Skillman Institute for Child and Family Development of Wayne State University.

The purpose of the Freer House membership organization is to raise public awareness of the local, national and international legacy and contributions of Charles L. Freer and promote the restoration and preservation of his historic home. The Freer House sponsors periodic lecture programs and events related to the cultural legacy of C. L.
