Freja's Foods

Seitan (say-TAHN) means “made of protein” in Japanese and dates back to Ancient China. In Japanese, the word is still used only in the macrobiotic context, and written as セイタン

The word was coined by George Ohsawa, who brought the macrobiotic diet to America, and either invented Seitan or worked closely with Kiyoshi Mokutani, president of Marushima Shoyu, who did, to bring it to market in the late 1960s

Legend has it that vegetarian Buddhist Monks developed wheat gluten by washing the starch and bran from whole wheat flour leaving just the protein. They made hearty dishes and served it instead of meat to invading Samurai warriors who sought food and shelter, and wanted meat. With its meat-like texture and flavor, and nearly as much protein as beef, no wonder the Samurai liked it.

Fast forward to the early 1970's in the Sierra Mountains of Northern California where our mother pioneered her own style of vegan cooking to feed her family. She discovered Seitan and updated it for modern American tastes. Growing up, we had smoky BBQ's, sizzling fajitas, hearty lasagnas and everything in between. We ate meatless but we never missed out!

Now a mother myself, I wanted to do the same for my family. With my own flavor of moms original recipe. I started Freja's Foods in 2012. With the help of my brother and Co-Owner, Ingmar Sciortino.

Now we are proud to offer to you the delicious Seitan we grew up eating! Because something this good has got to be shared! Thanks Mom!

Freja's Foods Seitan is artisan made in small batches with nothing but a short list simple, Organic ingredients. Our Seitan is soy free, preservative free, cholesterol free, vegan and packed with nutrition, 19g of protein & 7g fiber per serving! We are very proud of how healthy our Seitan is, but we are even more proud that (unlike many meatless options), our Seitan is absolutely delicious and has a uniquely satisfying texture!
