FRESH New London

FRESH stands for "Food: Resources, Education, Security, Health." FRESH runs a 5-acre farm at the Waterford Country School, and an urban community garden in New London, sandwiched between the city's largest elementary school and its only middle school. Teens in the summer farm crew and spring/fall education programs work the gardens and learn about advocacy, the food system, nutrition and leadership. They teach their families and peers about the importance of knowing what you're putting into your body, and knowing how it affects your body.
FRESH preaches that the food system should be more just, accessible, healthy and sustainable. That's why, since its founding in 2004, FRESH has worked with neighboring towns and school districts to spread its model of education through community gardening and farming.
FRESH sells its organic, locally grown vegetables to the community, with special focus on getting them into the hands of those least able to pay, even if that means selling them at below-cost. A successful farmshare program offers sliding scales based on ability to pay. A mobile farmers' market program visits eight different senior- and low-income neighborhoods and apartments complexes each week in the summer and fall, selling vegetables at half-price to residents.
