More about Friends of Bridges House

We are excited to invite you to become a part of preserving a great piece of New Hampshire's history! The Bridges House is both a historical home and official residence of all New Hampshire sitting governors. This beautiful home is also a place where Granite Staters can relive the past, discover history, and experience our state's rich cultural heritage.

The Bridges House was generously given to the state in 1969 by the family of former Governor and United States Senator, Styles Bridges. Once a fully working farm and full-time residence, over time, The Bridges House fell into disrepair. Basic maintenance and upkeep were neglected mainly due to a lack of state funds for preservation. As recently as ten years ago, the home itself was nearly uninhabitable. This jewel of New Hampshire and New England had lost its luster.

In 2004, First Lady Susan Lynch launched an aggressive effort to preserve and update the landmark, in order to share this unique treasure. Since that time, Friends of Bridges House has raised, gathered funding, and donated significantly for repairs and renovations. Senator Bridges wanted this home to be a functioning part of our state and government. His belief was a reflection of his own personality since he was the epitome of grassroots connections; he was an accessible and amiable person, whose door was always open.

The Friends of Bridges House through great leadership, board contributions, volunteers, and generous donations of time, resources, and funding has been able to get the house to where it is today. But, we still have much to do in regards to continued upkeep, furnishings, and more! Many of the beautiful interior pictures you will find on our website were taken with "borrowed" items, and the rooms were staged for pictures and to show what we "hoped" they would eventually look like.

Your support helps future work and improvements to be done. We invite you to be a part of this endeavor, to help preserve and celebrate history while ensuring The Bridges House remains alive with new events, new visitors, and new stories. Your support and participation are crucial for keeping The Bridges House, the —"People's House"— for all of New Hampshire's residents to experience and enjoy.
