More about Friends of Golden Park

Some in the Columbus city government want to sell Golden Park to a developer who may tear it down and put a casino, hotel, or condominiums on the South Commons. When founded in 1828, Columbus was surrounded by a greenbelt of commons. All we have left is the verdant swath on the city's south side along the river. Around 1920, the state of Georgia gave the South Commons to Columbus with the limitation that it had to be used for recreation purposes. Any other use has to be approved by voters in a referendum. The Friends of Golden Park want to re-purpose the 1926 stadium for an amphitheatre to preserve the Commons for the people..

Golden Park has a rich history. More than 20 future Hall of Famers played there, including Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Satchel Paige, Dizzy Dean, Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and Bob Gibson. Friends of Golden Park want to create a History of Columbus Baseball Museum at the amphitheatre to honor the park's past glory.

Friends of Golden Park need your help to save the park and the South Commons. Call or write your council member and ask that they not seek permission from the legislature to sell Golden Park. Support revitalizing the historic stadium as an amphitheatre. You can find contact information for your Columbus city council member at http://www.columbusga.org/council/council.htm.
