John Rock started his nursery operations in San Jose in 1865. He and R.D. Fox bought the land in Niles to found the California Nursery Company in 1884. It was about one square mile in size and at one time was the largest nursery this side of the Rockies. The nursery grounds contain the Vallejo Adobe.
