Who is the New College of Florida Quiz Bowl team?

We are a group of 29 students who attend New College of Florida (NCF), the honors college of the Florida Public University System. New College is a undergraduate, public, liberal arts college of 860 students located in Sarasota, FL. Our QB team is a mix of first, second, and third year college students. We are the third largest club on campus.

All Quiz Bowl teams intend to promote curiosity and enjoyment of learning by encouraging interest in trivia and facilitating student participation in trivia competitions hosted by NAQT (National Academic Quiz Tournaments) and ACF (Academic Competition Federation). Our “trivia” consists of primarily academia (all subjects you can think of), but sometimes with some pop culture (we like to call it “trash”) thrown in.

We accept all members regardless of skill level and train them how to do well in tournaments, while also learning about and appreciating each other’s areas of expertise. The members of our team all have an eternal curiosity, a desire to continue learning new things, even things outside of our comfort zone. We have the drive, excitement and talent necessary to exceed at Florida tournaments, and work our way up to the national level!

Because we are a new club, the student-run Student Allocations Committee (SAC) is skeptical about giving us more funding to pay for our tournament registration and transportation. However, we believe we are more comparable to our famous sailing team, which gets plenty of SAC funding for its off campus regattas. Our tournaments this semester are:
• October 10 at Florida Gateway College in Lake City (already almost paid entirely by the SAC)
• November 7 at University of Florida
• November 13-14 at Valencia College

As of now, the SAC has capped our funding for the semester at $850, which leaves us without any money for our Nov. 7 and Nov. 13-14 tournaments. Our members are committed entirely to the team and we have a serious goal to be a major contender at the national level. New College contains some of the brightest minds in the country and we should have a chance to do show other colleges that as well.
By having a Quiz Bowl team playing at tournaments around Florida (and eventually, around the country), it benefits New College and the greater Sarasota area because it:
• Gives students the chance to connect with other students of a similar intellectual drive from other colleges
• Adds to New College’s reputation as one of the best colleges in the country
• Builds awareness among other colleges of New College’s intellectual strength
• Entertains a large portion of the student body (Quiz Bowl is one of the largest clubs on campus)
• Promotes teamwork as well as learning independent of a faculty member
• Gives another selling point to high school seniors as another highlight of New College’s extracurricular activities
• Adds to Sarasota’s reputation as not just a center of the arts and culture, but also a city that appreciates its centers of advanced learning

$1,936 is our total goal to raise for this semester. Why is it an exact number? Because we’ve itemized everything and have all of our expenses documented or planned out. We aren’t being frivolous or extravagant, which is why we’re giving an exact amount. Our total equates to $66.76 per student in the club. Our first priority is to raise $1,054 for the Nov. 13-14 tournament at Valencia College (including registration fees, gas, and lodging).
