Gerber Land & Cattle

Gerber Land & Cattle is a registered polled Hereford and Black Angus operation located just south of Richmond, Indiana. Our business mission is to produce and market multi-trait superior beef breeding bulls for commercial and registered cow/calf producers. We focus on functional, high-performing cattle with emphasis on convenience traits: disposition, calving ease, calf vigor and udder quality. The importance of both pre-weaning and post-weaning growth is considered while never forgetting the end product merit and carcass quality.
Recognizing that real differences existed among cattle and those differences were both measurable and heritable, performance testing is a priority on our herd. Gerber cattle are managed in large contemporary groups and the calf crop is kept intact through the collection of yearling data. We record birth weights, calving ease scores, teat and udder score of dam at calving, weaning weights, yearling weights, and yearling hip heights on every calf born. Scrotal circumference is taken on every bull.
Carcass profiling is another part of being a responsible seed stock producer. Since 1995, all Gerber yearlings, including fed steers, have been ultrasound for carcass traits of rib fat, rump fat, ribeye size and intramuscular fat. Marbling remains the single largest driver in carcass price discovery and we keep that focus in the selection of our animals.
