Glendale Youth Sports

Glendale Youth Project aims to provide accessible sports, tutors and mentors to at-risk, low income and under-served youth. Studies done by Mentoring.org indicates that there are 18 million youth in need of a committed and caring mentor while only 3 million youth have access to one. Glendale Youth Project has an ambitious goal to bridge the mentoring gap by using sports and passionate college students as the vehicle for social change. For many of our young people, participation in sporting activities can be a fun way to build confidence, self-esteem, communications and teamwork skills. These activities provide valuable social and recreational activities that can deter young people from engaging in negative behavior such as vandalism, gang association and substance abuse. It can also give them a reason to represent and take pride in the communities.

GYP recruits, trains, and places college age coaches/mentors into our Glendale barrio to provide youth from disadvateged backgrounds a fun and safe environment to be active and engaged. The participating college students receive valuable experience and the opportunity to learn while making a positive impact on the lives of others.

Ultimately, GYP hopes to use the fundamental of sports, tutors and positive mentors/coaches role models to empower youth, equipping them with potentially life-enriching tool for the future.
