Some of the greatest little innovations of our time get used everyday and we don’t know who to thank for them. Like the stop sign. And duct tape. Sure, we know who invented the incandescent light bulb but who do we have to thank for the shotgun start? It remains a mystery.

We do know, however, who perfected the art of the shotgun start: We did! Gleneagles Country Club in Lemont, Illinois, “Home of the Shotgun Start.”

From a handful to 288 players, Gleneagles CC has taken all of your guesswork out of holding a shotgun event, as we host over 100 shotgun start outings each season.

Gleneagles is two, 18-hole golf courses, cut from the cloth of the traditional golf course of the Roaring Twenties

Designed and built by IPGA Hall of Famer Charles Maddox, Gleneagles played host to The Chicago Open in 1958 and ’59 – along with a veritable Who’s Who of golf of the era: Ken Venturi, the two-time winner, as well as Julius Boros, Gary Player, Fred Haas, Gene Littler and Sam Snead.

Even a young up-and-comer named Jack Nicklaus got an exemption to play here as an amateur!
Our two courses – The White/Woodlands and the Red/Lakes courses – were built in 1924. These are traditional golf courses; any changes conform to their original architecture.

Averaging 6,300 yards apiece, these courses play with small greens and are not difficult courses to play, if you keep it in the fairway.

Gleneagles has been in the McNulty family for three generations. And as owner Mike McNulty proudly points out, it’s one of a handful of privately-held, public courses in the Chicago area.

We’ve seen recently that everything that’s old is new again! Traditional courses are a pleasure to play and the trend is going back to this kind of course. We never abandoned this kind of pure golf. So whether you root for the Sox or the Cubs, Gleneagles is a golf course that all of Chicagoland can agree on are magnificent for golfers of all skills and abilities.
