More about Gold Medal Bakery

The bakery has been operated as a family business since it was founded by Auguste LeComte in 1912 when he installed a large oven in a basement in Fall River. He made bread using the same ingredients and care that went into home-baked bread. Productivity quickly soared to 4,500 loaves per week. His success was such that he constructed a new, modern plant at the corner of Lindsey and Monte Streets which employed nine people including four bakers and four regular delivery routes.

After Auguste’s death in 1936, the bakery continued to grow and modernized under direction of his sons, Roland and Leo LeComte. In 1952, the first “traveling oven” which was completely automatic, was installed in a newly remodeled plant.

In 1969, a new ultra-modern plant was built on Bay Street, Fall River. In 1990, Gold Medal bought the G.T.E. Sylvania Building, totally renovating the building, adding a maintenance garage, shipping doors and a 150’ enclosed walkway and cooling tunnel.

In 2002, Gold Medal expanded the Shipping Department by 29,600 square feet to include more docks. In 2004, Gold Medal installed two top-of-the line emergency generators to eliminate production interruptions associated with power outages, ensuring that our Customers will be provided product on a consistent basis every day.

Today, it is the most modern, technologically advanced bakery in the area, working around the clock to provide fresh-baked goods to area food stores, restaurants, and institutions. It can produce over two million loaves of bread per week. The bakery produces and transports “high quality” bread product to New England and beyond.

The bakery is still locally owned and managed by the LeComte family, specifically Roland LeComte, the President, under whose leadership the bakery has achieved a tradition of excellence that has made it the area’s leading baked goods manufacturer. While the bakery has changed a great deal since Gold Medal Bakery’s modest beginnings, the owners are firm in their belief that one thing will never change — that is Gold Medal’s ability to keep in touch with its customers and respond to their needs, faster and better than any other bakery. Judging from some of our customers, we are definitely fulfilling that belief.

We are very optimistic about the future of our Company as it continues to grow and meet the needs of the market that Auguste LeComte originally capitalized on. With the confidence and enthusiasm of our talented personnel, Gold Medal Bakery will continue to strive for excellence.
