HISTORY OF GOOD SHEPHERD UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Originated in 1837 as The United Brethren Church in Christ. The first services were held in the County Court House. The Court House was located in the historic circle
at Court and Main Streets.
Rev. William Hanby came to Circleville as treasurer of the printing establishment that published “The Religious Telescope”, later becoming its editor. He also served as pastor of the new congregation. In 1839 a brick church was erected at our present location with the Rev. John Coons as its Pastor. The Rev. David Edwards became Pastor in 1844, and in one year the membership increased from 125
to 716.
The church in which we now worship was completed in 1898 at a cost of $12,000.00.
In 1948 the General Conferences of The United Brethren and the Evangelical Church voted to unite the two Denominations to form The Evangelical United Brethren Church.
In 1950, a new educational unit, call the Christian Service Center was constructed.
The General Conference of The Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church voted to unite the two denominations to form The United
Methodist Church in 1968.
A complete re-vamping of the Church Sanctuary was Completed in 1986. Included in this renovation was the enclosing of the space between the Church and the Service Center to become “The Atrium”. The Service Center front was extended to accommodate the Library, Pastor’s Study, Church Offices, and the Fireside Room. In 1988 we celebrated our one hundred and fiftieth (150th) anniversary.
