More about Goshin Jutsu of Upper Dauphin County

Goshin Jutsu is one of many karate styles. Although these styles are similar there are also differences. A punch is still a punch. A kick is still a kick. But there are subtle differences in the technique and way they are done.

Goshin Jutsu teaches kata, or organized techniques against imaginary opponents, in order to develop the mind and body as one. These techniques can thus be used in a self-defense situation. Although one never reaches perfection, the practice of kata develops the techniques used.

Goshin Jutsu also teaches traditional weapons from karate’s history. These include the long bo, short nitton bo, kama and sai. Although it is doubtful a student will employ these weapons in a self-defense situation, their practice will enable a student to use whatever is at hand for defense. Note that edged weapons are all non-functioning and dull for safety.

Sparring, or practice fighting, is another aspect of Goshin Jutsu. This activity allows the student to put into practice many of the techniques learned in class. This is a controlled activity with minimal to light contact. Proper protective equipment is mandatory.

Goshin Jutsu differs from many other styles in that we place an emphasis on self-defense techniques. The practice of wazas, or combinations, again helps put techniques into practice. These wazas can thus be used in a real-life self-defense situation.

A final element that separates Goshin Jutsu from some other styles is that we believe strongly in attending tournaments. Tournaments normally consist of kata, sparring and weapons. Although it is certainly not mandatory, participating is a chance to test one’s self and their abilities. It is stressed that winning is not the aim of tournament competition. It is also a great chance to observe other styles and learn.

Our style incorporates many aspects of other martial arts into a well-rounded system. Many of Goshin’s masters have over 20 years of experience in the martial arts. Each and every one brings knowledge to the Goshin style.
