Grand Central Station - The Dining Car Soup Kitchen

A group at First United Methodist Church began in 2005 to study the need for a Soup Kitchen in Sherman. As they explored the issues, they found that there was a need. Applications for and acceptance of grants allowed purchase and renovation of a building at 110 Throckmorton. This is two blocks east of the railroad tracks in Sherman. A left turn is made and Grand Central Station is on the left. It was opened by a fully volunteer staff on October 11 , 2010.

Volunteers were first solicited through the churches in Sherman and surrounding areas. Now there are over 200 volunteers representing industry, neighborhood, and church teams who have gone through the training program. Over 150 of these volunteers serve on a monthly basis. We also have volunteer Food Managers on duty each day. To prepare and/or serve food a food handlers permit is required (free for volunteers through Grayson Co. Health Dept.). Those without food handler license participate in non-food related activities.

Lunch is served to all those who are hungry on Monday-Friday from 11-1. It is open for early guests at 9 AM and they are served breakfast rolls, juice and coffee. Sack lunches are handed out on Saturday mornings starting at 9:00 am until all prepared lunches have been handed out.

Donated food items are the basis for most of the meals. Purchase of fresh produce, meats and dairy products are made as needed using monetary donations.
