The Commons Natural Area offers a rich history and great opportunity to get out and enjoy quiet recreation just minutes from the City. Formerly a self-sustaining State Mental Hospital, this landscape has been utilized for therapeutic recreation, subsistence agriculture and outdoor recreation for over a century. A multitude of historic buildings dot the landscape, including "The Village at Grand Traverse Commons"(www.thevillagetc.com) the largest adaptive reuse project in the State history. With over 4.5 miles of trail to explore, the vast and staggering beauty found on this property will astound you!

Who is Experience 231?
We are a group of non-profits and local government organizations that are working together to preserve and protect the natural resources of Northern Michigan. The lands we manage offer some of the best outdoor recreation experiences in the country including: hiking, biking, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, swimming,
paddling, and birding.
