More about Grandma's House Gluten Free Bakery 757-224-3888

The creation of Grandma’s House Bakery was always a dream of mine. I just never knew it would be gluten free. I have always loved baking. Once I became a mother to my two sons, I took great joy in baking Chocolate Chip Cookies for them, seeing the smile on their faces. I have video of them sharing cookies with guests, and pictures of them reaching into my cookie tin.
My son became ill in 1999, and a Nurse practitioner suggested that he try eating a diet of gluten free foods. Back then no one had even heard the term gluten so I had a new mission. It was hard enough searching through the grocery stores scouring every product label in search of gluten free foods to eat but All of my home recipes, all of our families favorite meals and desserts needed to be adapted into new gluten free versions.

Making it a Gluten Free
I worked for many years, reading books, searching the internet, talking to others, trying to find the best way to make desserts, breakfast foods, sweet treats gluten free. I had failures, or blips in the road as I called them. Some tasted horrible but looked great. Some looked horrible but tasted great. I had to find the secret. I had some awesome successes. I sent my son, who was away at college, a care package with what was once one of his favorite cookies. Grandma's Chocolate Chip Cookies, were a special treat for him during high school after his games or after a long practice. It must have been in May, because I had been telling him about making the cookies for my daughter-in-law’s birthday as it was one that she always requested at family meals. In the care package, was a gluten free version of the cookies. He called me immediately stating that I sent him the wrong package, sounding very disappointed… until of course I told him they were gluten free…I would bet he had a glass of milk in his hand and was eating a cookie before I was even off the phone with him.
The best day was after many years of sometimes making a great chocolate chip cookie, and many times of making a mushy flat cookie, or a hard brittle cookie, I finally created a flour blend combination that made the perfect chewy, soft chocolate chip cookie. I was so excited when I called him, I think I was crying and he thought something was wrong. I have been able to consistently make my gluten free chocolate chip cookie for years now. With my new flour blend, I have been able to adapt all of my grandmothers recipes to delicious gluten free treats. I have many volunteers always calling to see if I have something new to try. I am so happy to be able to share my grandmothers recipes and my dream of having my own bakery with everyone.
