Grant AME Church - Long Beach, California

A Brief History of our church:
In 1911, Pastor B.E. Edwards, formally of Grant A.M.E. Church Los Angeles, organized a group of its former members into Grant A.M.E. Church Long Beach. Charter families were Louis and Fannie Milligan and the Cartwright family. The first pastor assigned to Grant was Pastor T.H. Wiseman. The first religious edifice was purchased and constructed on Myrtle Ave. in 1936 by Pastor Henry White.
In 1978 Pastor James Grant Sr. was assigned following Pastor Foster's departure. Although Pastor Grant initiated a building fund and was instrumental in the newly added sanctuary, the current Church building would not have been possible without five spiritually dedicated families at Grant. The families, all of whom had an elected Board of Trustee member in the household, allowed their homes to be used as collateral for the Church's loan. Without the assistance of the "faithful Five" it would have been difficult to finance the sanctuary in 1985. The families were: David and Eva Hill, Booker T. and Cleo Livingston, Overton and Martha Marable, Fred and Ruby Meyers and Anna Morgan.
Grant AME Long Beach has produced four Presiding Elders: Presiding Elder Jacks (Southern California Conference), Presiding Elder Foster (Desert Mountain Conference), former Presiding Elder (currently a Pastor) Copeland (Southern California Conference), and Presiding Elder Lindsey (Southern California Conference).
