The refuge consists of over 112,000 acres of forested wetlands. Lake Drummond, at 3,100 acres and the largest natural lake in Virginia, is located in the heart of the swamp. Over 200 species of birds and nearly 100 species of butterflies and skippers have been identified on the refuge. It's also home to the largest black bear population in Virginia.
