More about Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre

GHDT is a contemporary dance company, but as the name implies, the company performs in a wide variety of styles that combine modern dance, ballet, pointe, ethnic dance forms and theatre to create a unique style of movement and sense of drama. GHDT has created a large repertoire of over 100 pieces, rich in contrasts, which appeals to a broad-based and eclectic audience. In addition to the repertoire pieces, the company presents full-length contemporary ballets such as The Gypsy Vampires of Drakov, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, SUPERHERO; the story of a man called Jesus and Alice and Her Bizarre Adventures in Wonderland, and Romeo and Juliet at the Disco.

The most unique aspect of GHDT is its commitment to creating dances dealing with relevant social, political, cultural, historical and spiritual issues. The company has used dance to speak to its audiences about human rights and dignity. The company also presents pieces that are purely entertainment and lighter pieces for children.

The professional company produces four full-length concerts per season, which include World Premiere pieces as well as audience favorites from the company's vast and diverse repertoire.
Another unique aspect of the company is its use of in-house choreography. GHDT's multi-talented Artistic Director, Gregory Hancock, creates all the choreography. Mr. Hancock has received numerous honors and awards for his work as a choreographer including Master Artist Fellowships from the Indiana Arts Commission, Two Creative Renewal Fellowships from the Arts Council of Indianapolis and Lilly Endowment, Inc. and fellowships from ArtsLink and the Citizen Exchange Council in New York.

GHDT has toured to Europe and has appeared at the 11th International Baltic Ballet Festival in Riga, Latvia along with companies and soloists from Japan, Israel, Ukraine, Spain, The Netherlands, Latvia and Croatia. GHDT was also the primary touring company of this prestigious festival. The company has been critically acclaimed both locally and internationally.

GHDT has worked extensively with music and themes of India and has created a unique fusion of modern dance, classical dance of India and Bollywood style dance. The company has performed at numerous Indian events and has been embraced by the Indian community for its fresh take on Indian music and dance. The company has performed at the American Telugu Association National Convention at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey for an audience of over 14,000. The company is currently planning its first concert tour of India in the near future.

In addition to the work of the professional company, GHDT provides numerous training and performance opportunities for youth through The Academy of Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre, including an "all-student" production of The Nutcracker, an intensive Summer Dance Academy featuring international faculty and G2, the highly-talented second company of GHDT.
