A program of the Winston Area Community Partnership and a part of the "Build Our Kids" coalition, "Growing Healthy Kids" began in fall of 2009 focusing on establishing youth vegetable gardens/land labs at three Winston schools, beginning at the middle school (250 students) and adding an elementary school each year (additional 500+ students). At the middle school an after-school garden club (G3) has continued to gain popularity demonstrated by students continuing to meet weekly not only during the school year but throughout the summer to maintain their vegetable garden. Last summer G3 donated over 500 lbs of produce to the local food bank.
