G’s Jook Joint, a restaurant and lounge located in Royal Square at 111 E. Princess Street, features music and flavors deep rooted in the south. It’s soul food with a bayou spin. Breakfast all day, lunch and dinner. Because everybody’s gotta eat.
G’s Jook Joint is a home for music, food and socializing. We’re building community around two common principles: music knows no color and everybody’s gotta eat.
Historically, A jook joint (or juke joint) was a gathering place known for music, dancing, gambling and drinking. Jook joints were African-American establishments that operated in the southeast during the Jim Crow era.
The man who Put the “G” in G’s Jook Joint was the grandfather of proprietor, April Collier, and known as one of the best cooks in the neighborhood before his passing.
James "Groundhog" Grey was so nicknamed because he didn’t like cold weather and always came out dressed to impress in the spring. He owned and operated Groundhogs, York’s answer to the jook joints of the south.
We’re doing G proud and carrying on his tradition of good food, good fun and a sense of family and community. This one’s for G.
