More about Gyros on the Spit

History: The original Gyros on the Spit was opened in 1973 by George Sakkas in the Lakeview area. Using his knowledge of homemade Greek food he was able to build a thriving restaurant to support his wife, Donna and his two kids, Dora and Dino. Both kids grew up in the restaurant, learning how to take orders, keep track of stock, clear tables and prepare food. Being introduced to customer service at an early age. At the age of 13, Dino was working after school and on the weekends. By the time he was 17 he was working the second shift working, 5 pm until 3 am, to give his father a break. In 2000, when the lease was up for renewal, the landlord unfortunately did not want a restaurant in that location anymore. With George’s age, the family decided it was time for restaurant to close its doors for good.

Gyros on the Spit was a small counter restaurant with approximately 60 seats. With the new Gyros on the Spit, Dino is looking to replicate the small friendly-family feel with homemade recipes. Dino will include some of his parent’s authentic Greek recipes such as Spinach Pie, Cheese Pie, Greek Potatoes and the famous homemade gyros and tzaiki sauce, while also providing his own flare of modern day meals such as Bison and Lamb Burgers, Mini Pork/Chicken kabobs and “Dino’s Potatoes” all at affordable prices. This will be a family oriented establishment.
