Halifax Urban Ministries

Halifax Urban Ministries (HUM) is a non-profit organization whose prime mission is to prevent homelessness among at-risk families with children and individual adults and provide basic services, meals, and shelter to the area's homeless.

General Information
• There are an estimated 31,000 families in need throughout Volusia and Flagler counties.
• The services offered by HUM include temporary housing, food, counseling/support programs and emergency assistance.
• HUM has been serving our community for over 32 years.
• The area serviced by HUM is from Ormond Beach south to Oak Hill, west to Deltona and Pierson. Residents of Flagler county may come to Ormond for HUM services.
• Financial contributions and donations of food and clothing come from individuals, faith groups, organizations, corporations, and grants.
• We have 400 active volunteers that assist in the daily operation of HUM.

At the HUM Family Shelter
• HUM provides 24 units with ninety fours beds for homeless families with children.
• Provides up to six months of shelter for a family.
• All meals for the families are provided.
• Offers programs to prepare the families for independent living.
• On-site medical services by a Registered Nurse; Doctors at the clinic two days per month.
• Day Care & tutoring available for children.

Direct Services at the HUM Center on North Street
• Assist in obtaining documents. (Birth certificates / Social Security cards / ID cards / Notarizing)
• Additional services offered to assist in securing employment. (Internet access / Telephone / Bus passes / Haircuts / Showers / Laundry / Bicycles)
• Medical and prescription assistance.
• Financial Assistance: (Rent / Utilities / Prescriptions)
• Cold Weather Shelter. (Host sites are area faith groups and the STAR Center.)

Food programs
• In 2015 HUM provided over 24,960 food packages to the needy (Average cost to HUM $8.50 with a market value of $70 to $125.)
• Served over 96,295 daily noon hot meals in 2015 at the Bridge of Hope.
• HUM averages 1,200 breakfast bags per month.
• HUM on Wheels - In the South East Volusia County cities of New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill we provide services using vans and volunteers at 5 locations to better serve all of S.E.V. Locations are:
