More about Hamilton Public House

Hamilton Public House is Fort Wayne's first public house. We offer amazing food, spirits, service and sports. The name Hamilton comes from Fort Wayne's rich baseball history.
Most are unaware of Allen Hamilton (1798-1864) who was among other things, a deputy clerk in the U.S. Land Office, served as Sheriff of Allen County, was Fort Wayne's Postmaster, spent a year as a State Senator and was President of the Allen Hamilton National Bank. That was not all though, Mr. Hamilton was not just an influential member of Fort Wayne Society, he also also gracious enough to allow his land downtown near Lewis and Calhoun streets to be used by the local amateur baseball teams as a playing field and practice grounds. This was the first field used for baseball on record in Fort Wayne.
The sport of baseball was growing in popularity just before the civil war. Unfortunately Mr. Hamilton passed away before seeing one the the biggest firsts that Fort Wayne or the United States had seen, the playing of the first professional game! About 10 years after Mr. Hamilton had first allowed his land to be used for "America's Past Time", Fort Wayne was host to the first professional baseball game, being played at the Camp Allen site where Center and Huron Streets are currently located. The Fort Wayne Kekiongas won that first contest 2-0.

On the walls you will find the pictures and memorabilia of Fort Wayne's late baseball history along with other significant Fort Wayne history.
