MBAM was founded as a section for National Council of Negro Women and named after Mrs. Bethune in 1976. Many worthwhile projects were carried out under the banner on NCW, however it became expedite to separate from the National in 1983 and become a Michigan corporation with a 501 (c) (3). MBAM aquired Harambee House, its headquaters, and became a service center with a small banquet hall and licensed private club.
