More about Harbor Community Clinic

Beginning as the “storefront” in 1970 and catering to the needs of women and children, Harbor Community Clinic is now a comprehensive medical home to more than 5,500 men, women and children residing in San Pedro and surrounding communities. Harbor Community Clinic offers a wide array of healthcare services as well as referrals out to ancillary and specialty care, and enrollment assistance, all at low- or no-cost. The mission of Harbor Community Clinic (HCC), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) corporation, is to provide primary and preventive medical care to low-income, indigent, and uninsured individuals and families who cannot afford the cost of such services on their own.

HCC operates five main medical programs at two clinical sites. At its Adult Clinic on 6th Street in San Pedro we offer General Medicine, Family Planning, Prenatal Care, Mental Health Counseling, and Enrollment Assistance in various insurance programs. We also have a busy Pediatric Clinic, housed at a separate location on Beacon Street in space generously donated by the Office of Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe. In 2012, HCC finished a major renovation project at the 6th Street Adult Clinic that increased patient exam rooms from five to eleven and added provider and staff work areas and a wing devoted to mental health counseling.

In May 2015, Harbor Community Clinic gained formal recognition as a safety net provider of primary care services in an underserved urban community, and became a Federally Qualified Health Center; nine years after being an FQHC look-alike. This designation has allowed us to expand program offerings to greatly enhance their overall health and wellbeing, adding an additional part-time OB/GYN to our staff who can provide seamless prenatal care to our patients, from initial pregnancy testing through delivery of their babies, and an LCSW counselor to keep up with community demand.

HCC collaborates in various ways with other health agencies, such as Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center, which refers some ER patients to HCC for follow-up, and the Watts Health Center that brings its mobile mammogram truck to our site several times a year. Other local organizations have been able to assist with counseling the families of our pediatric asthma patients about managing their condition and providing nutrition and cooking education to our diabetic patients and those at risk. In October 2015, we contracted with the Children’s Dental Health Clinic in Long beach, to provide dental hygiene services and education to our pediatric patients.

As a new FQHC, HCC will continue to provide the same compassionate service to its patients, bring healthcare to greater numbers of people, and focus on comprehensive case management to ensure our patients get the maximum benefit from the resources we have to offer.
