Harlan County High School is a public high school located in the unincorporated community of Rosspoint, Kentucky, served by the post office of another unincorporated community, Baxter. The school opened in August 2008 to replace the three previously separate public high schools in the Harlan County district: Evarts High School, James A. Cawood, and Cumberland High School. The school has been met with mixed criticism, with praises for its unique architecture and design and educational value. Harlan County High School is known for its achievements in sports. The current head football coach at HCHS is Mr. Eddie Creech who replaced Tom Larkey after Larkey went in his final season. Mr. Creech went in his inaugural year with the black bears and has established Christian values in his team and have turned them into a powerhouse once again, this time, unlike Tom Larkey, with a spread offensive attack. Harlan County High School has a large First Priority First Priority meets in the Auditorium were they sing, worship, and have guest speakers.AdministratorsThe Administrators includes Main Principle Edna Bukhart. There is 3 principles one for each floor. 1st floor Kathy Minor, 2nd floor Mike Hensley, and 3rd floor Mark Bailey.HistoryMain construction for Harlan County High School began in 2006 and finished in 2008. Opening orientation was held on August 24, 2008, and school was scheduled to open for students the next day. However, an arson attempt activated several sprinklers throughout the school, forcing the postponement of opening day until September. More than 1,701 students began attending the school on opening day.
