Harrison House

Tucked away in the vast desert landscape on the edge of Joshua Tree National Park, esteemed composer and musician Lou Harrison (1917-2003) labored long to realize his dream of building a “composers cave” made of straw bales for himself and friends. The structure features a vaulted ‘great room’ proportionately designed as a superb and intimate sound environment for music. Today Harrison House stands as a monument to Lou Harrison’s lifetime of experimentalism, activism and concern for the environment.

Continuing the spirit of Harrison’s creation, Eva Soltes founded the Harrison House Artist Residency in 2006. With over forty years of experience as a producer, director and performer, Soltes designs each residency and public offering to optimize the creative experience for both artists and audiences.

From its inception, which began with a single performance by composer/vocalist Terry Riley honoring the memory of Lou Harrison, the Residency has evolved into Harrison House Music, Arts & Ecology, a prestigious residency, performance program and retreat for international artists, ecologists and thinkers whose works inspire the community to live creatively, while preserving our natural resources and regenerating the earth.
