More about Hawthorn Park

Hawthorn Park & J.I. Case Wetland Wildlife Refuge consists of 256.72 acres and total water area of 68.6 acres. The refuge is located on East Old Maple Avenue, 0.6 mile north of U.S. 40 off of Hunt Road (Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology lies on the southern border).

Hawthorn Park was established in August of 1980 and was named after the many Hawthorn trees located in the park.

Inside Hawthorn Park there is a lake, a campground, a beach, picnic shelters, playgrounds, restrooms, a boat launch, fishing docks, an archery range, and trails including a fully accessible trail with a wildlife observation shelter overlooking the J.I. Case Wetland Wildlife Refuge. The Refuge's 50.3 acre lake attracts migratory birds and has been left in its natural state since its acquisition in 1985. The Refuge is also a haven for fishermen because of the Refuge's natural appeal.

Hawthorn Park features the Kenneth E. Smith Memorial Labyrinth which was completed in 2003. The labyrinth design is based on the Chartres Labyrinth laid in the floor of the Chartres Cathedral in France around 1220 A.D. The labyrinth is surrounded by a meditation, rose garden and is fully accessible.

The Hawthorn Park campground, open May 1 - October 15, has 75 modern sites and 10 primitive sites. Shower houses are available within the campgrounds for campground users.
