At the end of life we are often in pain, anxious, depressed and full of fear. Therapeutic harp music is used to help recipients relax and cope better with these negative emotions. It also helps caregivers relax while the music takes them to a peaceful place for awhile. Oftentimes mood improves after only one session but repeated sessions are often used, based on the recipients experience and preference. Sessions typically last 20 minutes to an hour, depending on the situation and people involved. Special music can be requested but may take some time for the harpist to learn if it is not familiar.
I work with 2 hospices and take referrals through them; I am also able to contract with individuals not patients of those hospices. Music is tailored for the recipient based on their preferences, emotional state, and response at the time the harpist is present. Hence, each session can be very different.
