Heart of Dixie Longhorns

We acquired our first longhorns in the summer of 2012. It started as just a "thought". Alabama is known for beef cattle and longhorns are very rare around this part of the country. We considered just buying beef cattle and that be it. After visiting and calling several ranches that raised longhorns, our interest quickly grew. After a lot of researching, and thinking, we made a friend over the phone from St. John, Kansas. Pat and Janet Gleason of Big Valley longhorns answered every question we could think of and more. We researched their herd and found three heifers out of a great bull that we wanted to purchase. We also found a bull that we loved. We traveled to Kansas and spent time riding the pastures looking at cattle and ended up making some good friends half way across the country. Our herd is small as of now, but we are constantly looking for quality longhorns to add to our herd. Our intentions are to acquire the best cattle possible. Even though it may take us longer to "build a bigger herd", we want to have the best cattle our money can buy and not end up having to "cull" inferior cattle just to have more in number. Everyone has told us we are crazy for wanting to raise longhorns instead of beef cows,but after having these longhorns around the farm for this period of time, we can't imagine not having any.
