More about Historic Franklin Masonic Hall Foundation

The Hiram Masonic Lodge No. 7 has occupied the Hall since 1826, and is one of the oldest Lodges in the United States to reside continuously at the same location. Noted architect William Strickland’s Gothic Revival design of the Philadelphia Masonic Hall in 1810 may have been the inspiration for the Historic Franklin Masonic Hall. In fact, Philadelphia and Franklin remain the only National Historic Landmark Masonic Halls still in place today. The Hall’s survival into the 21st century underscores its significance, a steadfast witness to a 200-year history of Franklin.
Today, there is renewed desire on the part of the current Masons and the preservationists in Franklin to stabilize and preserve the Hall. Past simplistic additions led to present hazardous architectural instabilities. By their own admission, past Masons have not fully appreciated-or even understood-the risk posed to the building and the significance of its history. It is important to note, unfortunately, that this is a nationwide issue, and Franklin’s Masons are now dedicated to becoming a model for other Lodges to preserve their Halls. Franklin is a recognized model for preservation and public-private partnerships, and the Hall is ready to embrace the opportunity to further demonstrate this commitment.
The public has a vested interest in a fully preserved Hall. A stabilized building brings multiple upgraded community spaces, designed for use by diverse groups. The preservation of archives and artifacts will ensure the tangible legacy of the Lodge’s 200-year history will remain safe and accessible to visitors. Interpretation in both integrated public spaces and dedicated exhibits will bring about the goal of educating the public on Masonic history and demystifying the often misrepresented role of Masons in the community and country. A holistic approach to the project, engaging multiple press and media outlets, and involving wide-ranging community organizations, will represent a highly visible victory for modern preservation.
