Since its formation in 1966, the Historic Wilmington Foundation has been successful in saving many of the community’s historic buildings, including the deRosset House and the Brooklyn Art Center at St. Andrews.
With the establishment of a revolving fund and a preservation easement program, the Foundation has saved almost 200 historic properties from demolition. Our preservation successes include properties downtown and throughout Wilmington’s neighbors and across the Lower Cape Fear region.
Some well-known projects include Tarheels Go Walking, a partnership with NHC Schools that produces a cultural and architectural tour of downtown Wilmington for area 3rd graders. Legacy Architectural Salvage, a salvage operation accepting and selling donations of architectural elements c.1960 and older. LAS is open Saturdays 9:00am - 1:00pm at 1831-B Dawson Street, behind Stevens Hardware. To contact LAS directly, call 910.444.1751. And the Azalea Festival Home Tour, a docent-supported Home Tour of some of Wilmington's historic treasures. The Tour offers a glimpse into our past, along with historic and architectural information on each home.
