KENPO

Combining hard and soft styles, Iron Dragon Kenpo is a structured system of fighting skills that are, first and foremost, martial – the artistry of the style is a bonus. With a history of over 500 years of retaining and refining only those techniques that are truly functional, Kenpo was formed when Shaolin Kung Fu was brought to Japan. There it adopted the extreme power-moves of that country’s martial artists yet retained the deadly, flowing form of its origins.

Iron Dragon Kenpo is a complete system that will prepare you to meet any physical situation – from a rambunctious friend who has had one too many to an armed assailant – with appropriate force. Study with other adults (no students accepted under high school age) in a relaxed atmosphere. Beginners will feel comfortable, and you will learn at your own pace. We do our best to honor rank earned in other styles.

Not many sports are just flat-out fun, but no matter how good you are at it and how cool you look doing it, at its heart fencing is still just two kids out in the backyard sword fighting with sticks.

No matter whether you are young or old, large or small, male or female, you can fence—and fence well. Fencing offers an exceptionally level playing field to everyone. Smaller people are hard to hit. Bigger people have the reach. Younger people are athletic, older people are crafty. No matter who you are, fencing is for you.

We offer lessons on an on-going basis, year round. Our programs are based on a combination of private lessons and group classes. In the private lessons students learn new moves, have their errors corrected, and are taught the essentials of strategy. The group classes give them the repetition needed to make the moves more automatic, as well as the chance to fence others at their own level. Group classes are held Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Private lessons are by appointment.

Hit It! is unique for two reasons. First is that personal training means just that: you and your trainer are alone in the studio during your workout. No waiting for the gym rats camped out on the equipment to move, no worries about those cold, critical stares from across the room, and no searching for that missing dumbbell.

The second difference here at Hit It! is Dr. Stan Hurd. Having reached his fifth decade and having studied the sciences and the martial arts for most of his adult life, Dr. Hurd brings a depth of knowledge and experience that is exceptional in a personal trainer.

As a Ph.D. biochemist Dr. Hurd knows physiology, and as a life-long athlete he knows the importance of proper training for improved performance. And having had his share of injuries and illnesses (maybe more than his share), he has a good deal of practical experience with the effects of aging, post-surgery rehabilitation, joint problems, muscle spasms, tendonitis, and all the other maladies that can wear a person down and make their daily life more difficult than it should be.
