Holy Cross Missionary Baptist Church

In the year of 1954, the late Rev. Dr. James H. Porter was called by God to preach and teach His Word.

In 1955, Rev. Porter was blessed by God to organize a mission in his home on 15th Street with three people. God continued to bless him with more members, which gave him a seven. In the year of 1956,
Rev. Porter and his immediate members marched into a church building on 16th St. and named it the
Holy Cross Missionary Baptist Church.

God increased the membership to Four Hundred within a few years. Rev. Porter seen a larger church for the people in a dream; as the prophet, cup bearer, and visionary Nehemiah who had inspired others, to build the wall (Nehemiah 4:6). Rev. Porter inspired his members to get ready to move forward because God had a plan for his people.

God continued to bless Holy Cross, in December 1960, Rev. Dr. James Porter and the members moved to 6220 Linwood. One of the first built black churches in the city of Detroit. Rev. Porter sought out the land surrounding the church and built the James H. Porter Fellowship Hall which include: classrooms, administrative offices, a dining room (300 capacity), stage, learning center, and gym with showers which is adjacent to the church.

Pastor Porter served faithfully and untirely until he became ill. God call Pastor Porter home on February 14, 1992.

In November, of 1994 sent by God and elected by the people Rev. Edwon D. Brown became pastor of Holy Cross Missionary Baptist Church. He continued to build God's people with his blueprint, the Holy Bible, and the church increased. Rev. Brown faithfully served until he was called to pastor another church in Washington D.C. in February, 1999.

God blessed Holy Cross with their own Rev. Lorenzo Edwards Sr. as their pastor. A man faithful, righteous, and full of the Holy Ghost to lead his people by teaching, and preaching God's Word. Demostrating how we should love for one another. We are truly blessed to have a God fearing man as the anointed shepard of this congregation for Christ is the head of the church. We are still growing in the grace of the Lord.
