Hunt Phelan was built in 1823. It is the oldest standing house in Memphis and is rich in Civil War history. Host to 5 presidents with General Ulysses S. Grant planning the battle of Vicksburg in the library. General Polk also planned the battle of Corinth and both retained the home as headquarters.The home was also a hospital for soldiers wounded in the war. Freedman, (Slaves who had been released) received their first education in their first school on the property.
