Huntsville Church of Christ
The Church of Christ has been a part of the Huntsville community since the mid 1800s. This congregation, now meeting at 3737 Highway 30 West, was organized in the 1920s when the Rix family moved into town and a corner lot was purchased near the university at 15th and Avenue L. A white frame building was constructed in 1926 for what was then a membership of 65 members led by three elders, Cleveland Rix, D.G. Rambo, and E.D. Brown. The first located preacher was Perry D. Wilmeth, the beginning of a long history for us as the body of Christ in the city.
Prison Ministry
Brother Wilmeth also ministered to those in prison and converted Clyde Thompson, the most notorious prisoner in Texas. This was the beginning of what has become the Huntsville Institutional Ministry (HIM), our outreach into the now state-wide system of Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). This work has for many years been led by Freddie Anderson.
Mission Efforts
We have been engaged in local evangelism in the Spanish-speaking community. In the future we hope to increase our efforts locally, teaching and mentoring the immigrants from Mexico, Central, and South America. Our foreign mission efforts include work in Mexico, Honduras, Thailand, and Singapore. We also work with Eastern European Missions, Let’s Start Talking, and World Christian Broadcasting mission programs.
Campus Ministry
Our efforts to begin a campus ministry began in 1964 with a local Bible Chair where Bible classes were offered at Sam Houston State University for credit. Even though state regulations now prevent us from offering these for-credit classes, we continue to extend the kingdom of God on campus through this ministry. Our building in the middle of campus is a tremendous asset to our campus ministry efforts.
