More about Hurricane Island Foundation

Hurricane Island provides extraordinary opportunities for participants of all ages to discover what it takes to make a difference in the world - as students, scientists, citizens, and leaders. We offer science and leadership programs in the STEM disciplines, marine ecology, botany, ornithology, island and environmental studies, ocean monitoring and research, wilderness medical training, and sustainable design and technology. We encourage all participants to develop an ethic of environmental awareness through our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Hurricane Island requires all who visit to participate, learn, and grow while members of the island community, and rewards them with practical skills and knowledge, valuable credentials, and a transformative life experience. This beautiful 125 acre island in Penobscot Bay is truly off-the-grid, an ideal setting for demonstrating sustainable living practices and experiential education, highlights of which include sailing and rock climbing. We give students an opportunity to unplug, hone their critical thinking skills, and become more effective team members, communicators, and leaders.
The Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership and the Hurricane Island Field Research Station are both housed on the island, providing summer program participants, researchers, and students with a unique learning environment for authentic science and research that is meaningful and useful to the people and communities of the Gulf of Maine. The Center for Science and Leadership provides experiential, hands-on science education, wilderness programs, and leadership skill building for all ages. The Field Research Station brings researchers and undergraduate interns from a variety of disciplines to work directly with students, delivering actual field experience and an up-close view of what it means to be a scientist. Our learning community helps participants make discoveries about the natural world through hands-on experience with the scientific process, but we also help them grow as curious and engaged citizens, ready to thrive in our changing world.
