I Can Dance

‘I Can Dance’ School of Theatrical and Liturgical Dance was founded by Elder Alicia Pettus to give dancers the opportunity to worship through dance. The founder and instructor, Elder Alicia Pettus, was introduced to the art of dance as a child. Her passion for the art of dance was instructional developed as she pursued dance as an elective in college. She gave birth to the vision of ‘I Can Dance’ School of Liturgical Dance because she truly believes that we all were created to dance for HIS Glory. The theatrical aspect was incorporated in 2006 to take the dance school to another level by adding the dynamic of theatrics to make for a more vivid production that would bring about the specific message to the audience. Only by God’s divine plan ‘I Can Dance’ School of Liturgical Dance has blossomed into what is seen and known told as ‘I Can Dance’ School of Theatrical and Liturgical Dance.

Currently, I Can Dance offers the following dance classes: my chance to dance, advanced intermediate, hip hop, adult worship, adult contemporary, and mime.

My Chance To Dance: This energetic class is designed for toddler dancers ages 2.5 to 4 who want to dance but are not quite old enough to follow structured dance routines. The instructor uses games, stories, and songs to teach balance, rhythm, movement, and coordination.

Advanced Intermediate: This praise and worship class is designed for experienced dancers ages 5 and up. Students will learn praise and worship dance fundamentals and terminology while developing strength, confidence, balance, and flexibility. This class prepares the dancers to be able to focus on faster and more intricate footwork in order to develop speed, clarity, dynamics, and the ability to execute to complex rhythmic combinations.

Hip Hop: This dynamic high intense class is designed for experienced teen and adult dancers and is physically challenging. This class teaches rhythm, coordination, musicality, and hip hop choreography without suggestive music/ movements. Students are challenged to think on their feet while enjoying an energetic and fast-paced dance class. Our Hip Hop dancers develop focus, strength, and agility while having fun. This class is teacher appointed ONLY.

Adult Worship: This inspirational class is designed for adult dancers 18 and up. This class incorporates modern movement with worship style dance. This class offers slow-paced worship dance ONLY.

Adult Contemporary: This newly added inspirational class is designed for adult dancers 18 and up that enjoy a faster dance pace in the praise-style of dance. This class is more upbeat than adult worship but not as physically challenging as Hip Hop.

Mime: This expression class is designed for all ages. This class will blend elements of miming and modern dance, such as expression, interpretation of music, principles of mime, control, and balance. Students will be taught mime techniques while being encouraged to express their emotions and develop artistry through movement. The instructor will teach how to express emotion and portray a character through movement and facial expression.

The ministry of ‘I Can Dance’ can be experienced annually during the Fort Walton Beach Christmas Parade as the School reminds the community that Jesus is still the reason for the Season. The second experience is during its annual Recital and Stage Production typically held in April or May at the Fort Walton Beach Civic Auditorium.
