THE MYTH OF IKAROS
Pronounced: (ICK-'AH-ROS) or ('EEK-A'H-RoS,) in Greek
_____________________________________________

According to Greek Mythology, Ikaros's father Daedalus, a talented and remarkable Athenian craftsman and architect, built the Labyrinth for King Minos of Crete near his palace at Knossos to imprison the mighty Minotaur, a half-man, half-bull monster. Because Daedalus had given Minos' daughter, Ariadne, a clew, or ball of string in order to help Theseus, (an enemy of the king), to survive through the Labyrinth and defeat the Minotaur - King Minos imprisoned Daedalus as well. Daedalus, along with his son, Ikaros were imprisoned in a tower constructed with windows only accessible at the very top. Without any practical or possible way for them to reach the tower's windows, King Minos thought he had them cleverly trapped forever.

To escape, Daedalus engineered two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son. After being constructed Daedalus tried his wings first - which proved successful. But before taking off from the island, he warned his son not to fly too close to the sun, for the wax couldn't withstand the heat without melting. Overcome by the giddiness that flying lent him, Ikaros soared through the sky curiously. With such carelessness and hubris he came too close to the sun, slowly melting away the wax. Ikaros kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms, ultimately sending Ikaros plummeting into the sea. That area around where he fell today bears his name - 'IKARIA', a Greek island southwest of Samos.
