Immokalee Housing and Family Services

Immokalee Housing and Family Services (IHFS) was founded n 1985 to meet the needs of farm workers and their families. Formerly known as Immokalee Non Profit Housing (INPH) the name Immokalee Housing and Family Services was adopted to better reflect our role in the community.

During the height of the growing season in Florida, many landlords take advantage of laborers charging high rent for low quality housing. The goal of IHFS is to provide farm workers and their families decent, safe and affordable housing. As IHFS expanded to serve more families providing a variety of educational and social services became not only a necessity but a priority.

All of our resident’s are 50-60% below the median income in the state of Florida. Our resident’s do not receive government rental subsidies- they pay their own rent in full. The majority of our residents work in agriculture, the largest industry in Immokalee.

IHFS’ current services include:

Voluntary Pre-K, promotes early literacy skill and kindergarten readiness for our 2-5 year olds

Residents Council, monthly meetings include committee presentations, community announcements, guest speakers and a time for residents to express their concerns and questions

iTeens, encouraged community involvement, leadership development, and crime prevention among IHFS’ teen population

After School Enrichment Program, children K-6 work with staff and volunteers to complete homework assignments and puts extra emphasis on building students’ study skills

English for Speakers of Other Languages, provides a chance for our residents to build their English skills so that they can help their children succeed academically

Community Garden, serves to beautify the neighborhood, teach sustainability and environmental awareness, and bring the community together
