More about Innovative K9 Academy

Dog Training is Our Passion

We are active dog competitors who love training and spending time with our dogs. We actively train and compete in different dog sports and activities. We have helped many people create a stronger bond through obedience training and our reward-based system.

Our dog trainers have obtained their dog training skills by apprenticing under our Head Trainer, David Broderick, and attending the Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers. David works closely with our trainers to ensure quality of training and efficiency. David also makes sure that each dog gets the best training possible and achieves the highest level of obedience we demand.

We are continuously keeping our education and skills up to date by attending seminars, training clubs, competitions, the Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers, and our daily training with our customers! We believe there is no better way to be the best than to continue with education and training through helping our customers with their dogs’ daily problems.

David Broderick – Head Dog Trainer

Dog TrainingI have had dogs my entire life growing up. When I was 10 years old, I got my first personal dog. She was a beautiful German Shepherd. Sadly, after about 2 years she had gotten extremely aggressive to the point that she had attacked numerous dogs, killed many chickens and was a nightmare to take anywhere. I decided I wanted to train her and get rid of her aggression. I found a great dog trainer and started training with him. After a few sessions I saw great improvements and I was hooked! I continued working with my trainer and soon started training other dogs for him. I continued working with him until I was 17. During that time I showed dogs in AKC Obedience and Confirmation. I continued training my own personal dogs along with anyone else that asked. In 2009, I found Michael Ellis and started studying his system. It was the best training I had ever seen. I loved how happy the dogs were, how well they obeyed and how fast they learned. Shortly after I graduated from his school, the Michael Ellis School for Dog Trainers.

I am an active dog trainer and competitor in numerous dog sports. In 2015 I represented USA at the World Championships for Mondioring. I also actively compete in trials and competitions all around the country. In 2014, I took 4th place at the National Championship with a High in Obedience. I have achieved High-in-Trial, High-in-Obedience and High-in-Protection awards.

I am a member of the International Association of Canine Professionals.

I am a Board of Director member and decoy for the United States Mondioring Association.

I am Evaluator for the AKC Good Canine Citizen.

Sean Knudsen – Dog Trainer

Dog TrainerI have had dogs all my life, but it was not until after a year-long deployment to Iraq that I truly learned to appreciate just how incredible our canine companions really are. I really struggled fitting back into normal society. I had a lot of rage and would very easily become startled, hyper alert and angry.

Under the tutelage of David, I started training our dog and a new puppy. The motivational reward-based training system that Dave trained me in really helped me to understand that if the dog made a mistake it was not the dog’s fault, it was my fault, and that there is no reason to become angry with the dog. This realization helped me to learn not only to deal fairly with dogs but with people too. I have loved working with dogs more and more, especially now that I am training dogs in the service and sport aspects of it.

I absolutely love training dogs and seeing the lives of customers become more rich and complete with their now stable and well-behaved canine family member.

Our Dogs

Idole du Loups du Soleil MR3, BH, CGC
Idole is our main demo dog here at Innovative K9 Academy. She is trained fully in our training system and can be handled by just about anyone. She loves food and toys and will train for either. She is our resident puppy socializer and is also great for adults that need socialization skills.
Idole is the best all-around dog I have ever seen. She is great with new people, dogs, other animals and kids. She is obedient almost to a fault and always wants to do right. She is trained in a protection sport called Mondioring, which encompasses obedience, scent work, jumping and bite work.

Quick du Loups du Soleil
Quick is one of David’s upcoming competition dogs. He is still a young puppy but is showing great potential. He is a very social and stable young male with lots of confidence in everything. He is painfully food motivated and can’t ever get enough food. He is great with new people, kids, dogs and other animals. He will be trained in IPO. We can’t wait to see him start competing, as he is very flashy in his obedience and fun to watch.

The Lakota Bear

Lakota is a 150-pound Great Pyrenees mountain dog (Pyr), the big white dogs that guard the sheep from bears, wolves and coyotes. Pyrs are extremely protective; it is instinctive from hundreds and hundreds of years of breeding that into them. Almost all of the socialization we have done with Lakota has been to tone down that protective nature so that he knows when to protect and when it is OK to be friendly. The Pyrenees is a wonderful breed, but they are not always good pets. However, we have socialized him so well that he seems like a big furry teddy bear; everywhere we take him he gets surrounded by large groups of kids that pet and smother him, and it doesn’t bother him at all.

He is always the alpha dog in the group, but he has no dog aggression at all. He is really good for socializing dogs and puppies because most dogs do not get a chance to meet such a large dog. He is afraid of nothing at all and along with his confidence and calm nature he is a very calming influence on dogs around him.

Kimora

Kimora is a year old; she has very good obedience, and she is being trained to be an Autism service dog. She is learning to retrieve, hunt, track and calm people down. She has a very calm nature about her and will be a great service dog.

A mutt, a German Shepherd/Border Collie mix, her mother is a beautiful purebred German Shepherd. After a salacious night out on the desert by her mother, distracting a Border Collie from his duties to his sheep, Kimora is the result. She is very sweet, smart and incredibly athletic. She has a great deal of toy drive and will play fetch forever. We have to tell her that it is time to quit because she will not stop. She loves to play with the Belgian Malinois; athletically she can just about keep up with them, but she does not have nearly the drive of the Mals—but she still likes to try.
