JACOA was chartered in the summer of 1964 as The Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism by three local citizens who saw the growing need for substance abuse treatment in the community. The founders were a housewife (Nancy Tuchfeld), a physician (Frank Moore) and a local business man (Sam Bergel) whose first collective act was to hire a recovering alcoholic, Robert Aspell, as the first Executive Director. The charter was amended in 1970 to add the descriptive words “And Drug Dependency” to its official name. In the 1980′s JACOA moved to its present location on East Chester Street and began to offer residential treatment for men and women.
At the present time JACOA has 106 beds in Treatment and Transitional services and continues to serve all the counties of West Tennessee.The Jackson Area Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependency (JACOA) is licensed by the State of Tennessee, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, to provide Alcohol and Drug Residential Rehabilitation treatment (41 beds), Alcohol and Drug Non-Residential Rehabilitation Treatment (IOP) and Alcohol and Drug DUI School Services. JACOA offers a complete continuum of care, is co-occurring capable (CODC), and serves all of the counties in West Tennessee, and it will also accept service recipients from any county across the State of Tennessee. The organization offers a wide range of services for the community, including:
32 bed residential treatment for adult males and females utilizing evidenced-based treatment
9 bed residential social detox treatment for adult males and females utilizing evidenced-based treatment
Partial Hospitalization for males and females
Intensive Outpatient Services
Treatment for Co-Occurring disorders for adult males and females utilizing evidence based treatment
Transitional housing for males (35 beds)
Transitional housing for females (7 beds)
Permanent Housing for homeless recovering males and females (24 beds)
Monthly DUI school education class using the Prime for Life curriculum
Weekly Family Group Counseling
Early Intervention program
Aftercare Services
Drug testing services
Substance Abuse Prevention program collaboration with Madison County Juvenile Court ,utilizing the Positive Action curriculum
Tennessee Teen Institute (Prevention program for youth)
Tennessee Students Against Destructive Decisions Program
Member of the Tennessee Association of Alcohol, Drug and other Addiction Services (TAADAS)
